Black Swan: A Little Bit Creepy, But Still Good (Probably)

I trust you've all seen this trailer for Black Swan?

This looks creepy as hell.  But also fantastical, so I will be there on opening night, duh.  There are three things I like about this movie already.  First, Natalie Portman.  I think that angels crafted her face.  I could stare at her for two hours on screen no matter what she was doing.  But the fact that this movie is about Ze Dance is amazeballs.  Oh, that's the second thing.  Ballet movies are always fun because ballet is so hardcore.  Oh, and 'cause watching the editors cut from the actors' sloppy dancing to a trained dancer's perfect form is fun times.

The buzz about town is that Natalie Portman will get an Oscar for this movie, so she'll probably get one.  I need to get my friends to band together and create buzz about how I'm gonna win an Oscar.  Sheesh.

The third thing I like about it (which wasn't really in the trailer) is Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed "Black Swan" and also has a small part.  He is such a gorgeous dancer.  Check out his choreography:

Swoon. I can't wait to see this movie on December 1st!

Music Monday: Bruno Mars

I have a confession to make: This post represents a conflict of interest. I have a personal stake in you buying and liking Bruno Mars' music because. . . I know him. He's from Hawaii like me. We kind of grew up together (at least until middle school). Our moms are really good friends, and I squeed like a true fangirl the first time I heard "Nothin' On You" on the radio.

There. I've said it. Now you'll know that this post is totally biased, but I don't care. You know you love that "Billionaire" song with Travis Travie McCoy- even though it is grossly overplayed. And you can't deny that this mashup of "Just the Way You Are" with Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" is brills.

So, I won't drone on about why you should pick up Doo Wops & Hooligans when it comes out on October 5th.  Maybe if I were a music critic for serious I would try and be impartial- but this is little Bruno, the kid who taught me how to Moonwalk.  Just do it.

Pomplamoose & Ben Folds & Nick Hornby

. . . have teamed up to bring us a new Videosong.  Which, I'm gonna assume is a song on video.  It looks like Ben Folds is coming out with a new collaborative album with lyrics by Nick Hornby, one of my favorite authors.  I don't know about you, but I think the combination of Nick Hornby's one-liners and Ben Folds' quirky pop sounds amazeballs.  Check out the video I first found on Buzzfeed:

Smited/ Injured: Jordin Sparks

"It hurts riiiiight here."
Caution tape!
Jordan Jordin Sparks reportedly injured her hip during a performance of "In the Heights" on Aug. 28th.  According to Broadway.com, the singer finished the remainder of the show, but didn't perform in either of the shows on Aug. 29th.  As of now, there's no date set for her return.

So, my good friend "hipped" me to this story (oh that pun was most def intended), and she had this to say:

"Possibly. . . a sign from the Broadway gods saying 'Get the celebrities OUT.'"

She got me thinking with this:  Can celebrities really keep up with Broadway?  It seems like shows will put in a famous face to help boost ticket sales, but often the star has a hard time with the grueling demands of a Broadway show schedule.  Most actors don't just pop up on the broad-way out of nowhere.  It takes years to get there, after studying and auditioning and paying dues.  It's during this time that people can build up the stamina to do a show night after night.

I'm not saying that Jordin Sparks deserved what happened to her.  I'm not saying that she doesn't deserve to be in a Broadway show.  Injuries happen to the best of us.  I'm just sayin'.

Music Monday: Sufjan Stevens

Let me help you with your tie, Sufjan
So, last week (August 20th) Sufjan Stevens quietly released an EP titled "All Delighted People."  It's only eight songs, but runs over 59 minutes, and focuses around two versions of the titletrack.  I think it's pretty groovy.  I definitely love both versions of ADP.  At a combined 19:45, they're both interesting enough to keep me tuned in.  I think my favorite track is "Heirloom." It's got a great folky sound that for some reason reminds me a little of Simon & Garfunkel.

This is one of Stevens' few releases since 2005's The BQE, which was really weird and electronic (not that electronica is always weird!).  I really like it, and I'll be listening to it until his full length, "The Age of Adz" comes out October 12th.  While I listen, I will be imagining him singing it to me, because he is hot sauce and that's my prerogative.

Mockingjay: It's All About the Music

Truer words have never been spoken
Mockingjay is here!  If you don't know what the aitch that is, read this.  Done?  Okay, moving on.  Long story short:  I loved it, I hated it, I have lots of thoughts and opinions about the ending, none of which I'm going to share right now.  What I am going to talk about is the song, "The Hanging Tree."  This is something Suzanne Collins wrote in Mockingjay, that I spent a large part of the book trying to make into a real song.

"The Hanging Tree" in the book is a song that Katniss' father teaches her as a child, which she later sings while revisiting a favorite childhood place that has been destroyed.  (Oh- that was kind of a spoiler. OK fine, this post is kind of SPOILER-Y.  Sorry! )  The song is pretty gruesome, but I think it's a central theme of the plot.  Here's a quick sample:

Are you are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man they say murdered three
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight by the hanging tree

The song is banned by the fictional government in the story.  It's never explained why, but if you look at why real-life governments ban songs, you can pretty much figure out why.  Think about the Billie Holiday song, Strange Fruit.  (If you've never heard it, watch a performance of it here)

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

This song, based on a poem originally written by a Jewish schoolteacher, was so controversial at the time Holiday's life was threatened.  The first time my mom played it for me as a little girl, I got chills over my entire body- and I still get them when I hear it today.  It's no wonder that the song became an anthem for the Civil Rights movement.  I believe that the "murderer" in "The Hanging Tree" was actually a rebel punished by the government in THG.  The song was banned because it told of government cruelty and might have called the people to action.

It's easy to see how a simple song can overthrow a government, then.  Sometimes we forget just how powerful music can be, if we want it to be.  It can bring comfort, describe deep love, and even move people to action.  When we as artists make music, it is a real thing that leaves us and goes into the consciousness of people.  We can only hope to affect them in some small way.

I'm a deep thinker, ya'll.

I can't wait till The Hunger Games movies are made and I can hear this song brought to life.  I only hope it ends up being as moving as it was on the page.

Have you read "Mockingjay?"  What are your thoughts about this post?  Has any song ever affected you like, "Strange Fruit?"

I Heart Harry

Did you know that I love Harry Potter?  You would if you'd read this post.  I do.  I like the movies, the books, the stars, the theme park.  I can't wait to be here during the Holiday season.  It will be amazing and I'll probably fangirl out.  Hard.

In honor of that love, here are a couple of funny/awesome things I found recently about the wonderful world of Potter.

A couple of weeks ago I was on Post Secret and I saw this submission.  If you've been in a coma If you don't know, Post Secret is a site where people submit postcards with. . . um secrets on them.  Anonymously.  It's sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, always entertaining.  Anywho, here's the good stuff:

Next up, a wondrous piece of art from Regretsy.

It totes looks like Lance Bass.  He must be pissed.

More HP fun after the jump!

Did You Watch? VH1's Behind The Music: Fantasia

Tuesday night was the premiere of Fantasia's "Behind the Music."  It included info about her life before and after "American Idol," including her recent suicide attempt.

I have to admit that I was out of the country (studying abroad) when her season of Idol was on, so I kind of missed all the hype about her.  I've still always been interested in her story: high school dropout overcomes abuse and teen pregnancy to rise to super stardom!  That's amazing, no matter what.

The main reason that I wanted to watch, of course, was to find out about why she would ever have wanted to end her life.  I've watched her reality show a couple of times, and it's clear that she's got some family disfunction.  I missed the whole scandal with her and that married guy, though, so for me this whole story came out of nowhere.  After watching, I'm convinced that Fantasia was probably driven crazy by her family.

This really spoke to me as a performer.  As everyone knows, this business is quite often a total nightmare.  Without the proper support, the constant criticism, and being taken advantage of takes a toll.  Most people don't see their personal and professional failures broadcast on TV, but many performers do.

I'm nothing special just yet, but am I prepared for that?  I'm not so sure.  Most of us start in this career because we have a passion for performing, not to have our lives dissected in tabloids.  But in 2010, can you really expect to be successful in the industry and escape media scrutiny?  I really hope that Fantasia finds the support she needs, and that she can get her life back on track.  We do this job because it's fun and to escape all the drama, not bring it on.

So, did you watch "Behind the Music?"  Can an entertainer make it without going bananas?

5 Benefits of Kissing

According to MSN and SELF Magazine, there are 5 additional benefits to kissing (besides the. . . uh. . . kissing).  Think about this next time you're going full throttle:

1.  It boosts immunity.  You share a kiss, you share germs.  Help stave off cold and flu season by building up your tolerance to the little critters now!

2.  It busts stress.  Kissing makes your body release oxytocin, endorphins, and dopamine- your body's most powerful calming, mood boosting, and bonding chemicals.  That def explains why you feel super duper after a good makeout, even if your boss is pulling a Miranda Priestly.

3. It may ease allergies.  Major bonus, esp. if you are me.  Apparently, 30 minutes of face time slows down your histamine production.  (And if after 30 minutes of face sucking you're still thinking about your allergies, you have bigger problems.)

4. It's good for your teeth.  You make more saliva (why they call it swapin' spit), which neutralizes cavity-causing acid and removes food particles (oh! you had lasagna for lunch? yum)

5.  It counts as a workout (sort of).  You burn 6 calories kissing.  So smooch away.  Then have that second cookie you've been pining over.  It's fine.
